NFL Notes: Los Angeles, Panthers, Seahawks, & Steelers

Los Angeles

Jason La Canfora reports that Chargers owner Dean Spanos has support from many of the “old-guard owners” are inclined to support the Carson project as a favor to Spanos.

However, Rams owner Stan Kroenke has the backing of influential Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, according to La Canfora.

La Canfora writes that even though Jones is not a member of the LA-committee, some would say he holds considerable sway in the talks.

Several team sources don’t believe Jones’ personal ties to Kroenke are the main reason he supports the Inglewood project.

“Jerry will follow the money (in terms of how he votes for NFL matters), and Jerry is very attracted to the mega-rich,” one source told La Canfora.

As of now, no one in the league is certain about what the outcome will be in regards to a team relocating to L.A. for the 2016 season, but La Canfora mentions that all matters appear to be very negotiable.

Panthers

  • Joel Corry reports that $26 million of Luke Kuechly‘s new extension with the Panthers is fully guaranteed at signing.
  • This includes a $6 million option bonus, which isn’t technically guaranteed, but it’s certain to be picked up.

Seahawks

Jason La Canfora reports that the Seahawks are prepared to be without safety Kam Chancellor for the opening month of the season while he is holding out for more money.

According to La Canfora, the Seahawks realize they have to draw a line somewhere, even though they’ve reworked contracts in the past for players like RB Marshawn Lynch.

Seattle is reportedly unwilling to reward Chancellor for staying away from the team at this point, but they’re at least open to shifting around some future money into next year’s contract.

The problem is that Chancellor remains away from the team. League sources have told La Canfora that if Chancellor were to report to the team, and show up in good shape, the situation could possibly be resolved quickly.

La Canfora adds that the Seahawks would likely forgo much of the substantial fines Chancellor has accrued to this point.

Steelers

Steelers President Art Rooney II released a statement regarding assistant coach James Daniel, who was allegedly involved in an incident with a Patriots’ fan.

We have conducted an internal inquiry into the alleged incident involving Assistant Coach James Daniel at the Patriots stadium Thursday night. After interviews with Coach Daniel as well as other personnel who witnessed the alleged encounter, we find no corroboration that Coach Daniel was involved in any physical altercation with a fan.

Coach Daniel has worked as an assistant coach for the Steelers for the past 12 seasons. We have a high level of confidence in his character and are confident that any further investigation of this incident will reveal he was not part of any assault or misconduct involving a Patriots fan.
