NFL Notes: Marshawn Lynch, Rule Change, Browns, Buccaneers

Marshawn Lynch

  • A source tells Ian Rapoport that Marshawn Lynch un-retiring is  “realer than it’s ever been.” According to Rapoport, it’s “Raiders or bust” for Lynch.

Rule Change

  • Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that the competition committee is expected to propose a rule change that would ban defensive players leaping over the offensive line in an attempt to block kicks.
  • Maske says that this measure could be brought up for a vote during the upcoming owner’s meetings that are scheduled to take place next week.

Browns

  • Even though it would almost certainly be a very costly move, Mary Kay Cabot believes the Browns would be better off pursuing a trade for Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo, as opposed to using their No. 12 overall pick on Mitch Trubisky.
  • Cabot can’t see the Browns’ plans changing much in regards to Brock Osweiler. Cleveland has been trying to trade him and the expectation is that they will release him if there’s no deal to made in the coming weeks, which would allow them to recoup some of the $16 million salary Osweiler’s guaranteed for the 2017 season.
  • According to Cabot, “the ship has sailed” in regards Josh Gordon‘s future with the Browns.
  • Cabot could see the Browns checking in on second-tier quarterback options if they can’t get Garoppolo from the Patriots such as Trevor Siemian or A.J. McCarron.

Buccaneers

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht admitted that while they still have confidence in K Roberto Aguayo, “he wasn’t very good last year.

“Read the stats, he wasn’t very good last year,’’ Licht said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “He wants to improve and he’s going to work at it. And we still have confidence in him but you’re always trying to get better.’’

The Buccaneers elected to sign veteran K Nick Folk to add some competition at the position this summer, and Licht made it clear that he isn’t afraid to cut his losses if a player doesn’t perform.

“The mistake would be to be prideful,’’ Licht said. “That’s the bigger mistake.’’

Licht added that they’re expecting much more for their 2016 second-round pick this season.

He’s a rookie. He’s 21 years old,’’ Licht said. “He had to learn that he’s not doing this for fun anymore. He’s got a lot of people depending on him.’’
