NFL Notes: Michael Floyd, Chargers, Jaguars & Vikings

Michael Floyd

  • According to Adam Schefter, Patriots WR Michael Floyd has his first pretrial hearing for DUI charges scheduled for February 24, which is just a few weeks before the start of free agency.
  • Schefter says that Floyd will have to serve some amount of time in jail for the incident, but the exact amount remains in question. If the court considers this a second offense, his “super-extreme” DUI comes with a 180-day sentence, which could put his availability for the 2017 season.

Chargers

  • Multiple sources tell Adam Schefter there’s a “real chance” Sunday could be the final game for the Chargers in San Diego.
  • While Chargers owner Dean Spanos won’t make a final decision until after the season, it’s possible he will file for relocation to move the team to L.A. and join the Rams.
  • Schefter wonders if the Chargers may approach veteran TE Antonio Gates about a pay cut, given that they’ll likely feature Hunter Henry next year.

Jaguars

  • Chris Mortensen reports that Jaguars owner Shad Khan and his son Tony will be active participants in the team’s head-coaching search, as they view this as a “defining moment” for the franchise.
  • Ownership met with veteran HC Tom Coughlin and interim HC Doug Marrone this week, but Schefter says that GM Dave Caldwell will eventually be involved in the process.
  • League sources tell Schefter that Jacksonville still wants to ensure their next head coach has prior experience, which is why Buccaneers DC Mike Smith is considered a “strong candidate” for the job.
  • While Patriots OC Josh McDaniels and Steelers OC Todd Haley both have head-coaching experience, Schefter’s sources don’t see a match for them in Jacksonville.
  • As of now, Schefter says there has been “heavy interest” in the job from established coaches around the league, due to the team’s young talent, division, and ownership.

Vikings

  • Adam Schefter writes that Vikings HC Mike Zimmer’s recent comment that QB Sam Bradford‘s 2016 was “pretty amazing” considering the circumstance is a good indication that Bradford will open the season as the team’s starting quarterback with Teddy Bridgewater serving as their backup.
