NFL Notes: Mitch Trubisky, Chad Kelly, Bills, Jets, Raiders

Mitch Trubisky

An AFC senior personnel executive tells Bucky Brooks of NFL.com that he thinks there’s a little Derek Carr in UNC QB Mitch Trubisky’s game.

“Call me crazy but I see a little Derek Carr in his game,” the executive said. “From the poise, decisiveness and quick delivery to the precision passing and athleticism, he looks like the real deal. … The inexperience bothers me and I can’t stop wondering why he couldn’t beat out Marquise Williams (for the starting job in 2014-15).”

Others said that they like Trubisky’s arm talent and overall athleticism, but they’re concerned about his lack of experience and the fact that he couldn’t beat out Marquise Williams for the starting job.

Brooks compares Trubisky to Chiefs QB Alex Smith and mentions the Browns, Bears, Jets, Cardinals, Giants and Chiefs as teams worth watching as possibly landing spots for him.

Chad Kelly

  • According to Bill Polian of ESPN, Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly was initially invited to the NFL Scouting Combine before the NFL rescinded his invite. (Pro Football Talk)

Bills

  • Mike Rodak of ESPN writes that if the Bills value restricted free agent RB Mike Gillislee as much as other teams around the league, they should use a second- or first-round tender on him to prevent another situation like the Patriots signing away WR Chris Hogan last year.
  • Even if a team signs Gillislee to a contract that’s tough to match, this would allow them to recoup a solid draft pick for him as opposed to the fifth-round pick they would receive if they just used an original-round tender on him.
  • The restricted tender costs from last year were: $3.6 million (first), $2.5 million (second) and $1.5 million (third).

Jets

  • Joel Corry believes the Jets will be “hard-pressed” to get a first-round pick in a trade for DE Sheldon Richardson.
  • One recent report mentioned that New York may only be able to secure a third-round pick for Richardson. (NFLTR)

Raiders

  • Jason Cole of B/R reports that there is “increasing anger” from some NFL owners about the lack of help from the league to keep the Raiders in the Bay Area.
  • Cole says that there’s a strong group of owners who believe the NFL has failed to help and instruct owner Mark Davis with marketing the team and overcoming some of the political obstacles in the way of keeping the Raiders in Oakland long term.
