NFL Notes: Nick Foles, HC Rumors, Chargers, Texans

Nick Foles

  • Tim McManus of ESPN writes that the most likely outcome for QB Nick Foles is that the Eagles will decline his option next year and allow him to hit the free agent market.
  • McManus says it would be very difficult for the Eagles to carry Foles as a backup at the price tag of $20 million, especially with Carson Wentz in place as their starting quarterback and in line for a massive extension.
  • Attempting to trade Foles after picking up his option could be tricky, given that Foles has the ability to void the contract. Any team interested in trading for him will want to get a long-term extension done before parting with compensation, which adds another layer.
  • As for some teams to watch for Foles next year, McManus lists the Jaguars, Buccaneers, Dolphins, Giants, Redskins, Broncos and Bengals.
  • McManus says Foles could end up commanding the $18 million per year Case Keenum got from the Broncos and possibly as much as the $28 million per year Kirk Cousins secured from the Vikings.

HC Rumors

  • Peter King says the Jets, Broncos, Buccaneers and Cardinals are likely to join the Packers and Browns by parting ways with their head coaches.
  • King considers the Dolphins and Bengals50-50” to fire Adam Gase and Marvin Lewis respectively.
  • According to King, the Panthers and Jaguars are “less likely but possible” to be in the head-coaching market.
  • This means there could be between 6-10 head coaching jobs available after the season.
