NFL Notes: Nick Saban, 49ers, Broncos, Packers

Nick Saban

Alabama HC Nick Saban signed a three-year contract extension that will pay him $11.125 million for the 2017 season. The deal includes a $4 million signing bonus that was approved Tuesday by the university board of trustees’ compensation committee, according to USA Today.

In total, Saban is now under contract for another eight years and stands to make $65 million over this period of time.

49ers

While the 49ers have maintained that first-round LB Reuben Foster won’t need surgery on his shoulders, Michael Lombardi mentioned on The NFL Show” podcast that Foster may need surgery before the season begins.

“The 49ers should count their lucky stars they didn’t pick Reuben Foster at the third pick overall,” Lombardi said. “Because Foster may require surgery before the season even begins. People are saying he’s fine, everything’s gonna be good. That’s not what I’m told by a lot of teams in the league. That’s why he slipped.”

Broncos

  • According to Troy Renck, the Broncos tried to trade up in the draft to get RB Christian McCaffrey.
  • After they were unable to complete a deal, Renck says that the Broncos considered taking a running back in the next few rounds.
  • Renck believes that if the Broncos deem free agent RB Jamaal Charles to be healthy during his upcoming visit (NFLTR), he could see a deal getting done.

Packers

  • Tom Silverstein reports that the Packers signed veteran G Jahri Evans to a one-year deal is worth $2.25 million, which includes a $200,000 signing bonus, a $1.15 million base salary, $800,000 in per-game roster bonuses, and a $100,00 workout bonus.
