NFL Notes: Nick Saban, Browns, Jaguars, & Titans

Nick Saban

Colts writer Bob Kravitz mentioned during an interview with Mad Dog Sports Radio that owner Jim Irsay doesn’t believe HC Chuck Pagano “is the guy who can take him to where he wants to go.”

“Jim Irsay does not believe that Chuck Pagano is the guy who can take him to where he wants to go,” Kravitz said, via Pro Football Talk. “He’s talking about not just one Super Bowl, but multiple Super Bowls in the Andrew Luck era.

According to Kravitz, Irsay will make the next coaching hire, which could ultimately be Alabama HC Nick Saban.

“Jim Irsay is going to make the next coaching hire,” Kravitz said. “If he brings in a guy who demands full power, like, say, a Nick Saban, who I think he’s going to go after, if he brings in a Nick Saban, he’s going to have full power and that means that Ryan Grigson will either be kicked to the curb or he’ll have a different role in the organization.”

Mike Florio of PFT writes that the Titans “would be nuts not to kick the tires on Saban.”

Browns

Browns QB Johnny Manziel indicated to reporters earlier in the week that he’s working to overcome his limited height and get use to seeing coverages ahead of time.

“I am continuing to gain confidence in playing in this system and playing in this offense,” Manziel said via Pro Football Talk. “It takes a lot of time getting used to seeing these coverages, knowing where people are going to be and exploiting that. I am not going to be able to sit there like some of these taller quarterbacks in the league and just be able to see everything happen as it plays in. There are going to be times where I am not going to be able to see something and I am going to have to make a faith throw, knowing that it is Cover 3, and this guy is here and this guy went there with where this person is. As I continue to watch film, continue to play in these games, there are going to be times when I am not going to be able to see everything like everyone else is as clear as day. I think I am getting better at it, but I am nowhere near perfect, that is for sure.

However, Browns HC Mike Pettine said he’s not concerned about Manziel’s height, citing the success of players like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson.

“I don’t see it as concerning,” Pettine told reporters. “There are other quarterbacks of his stature that have been successful in this league. I see part of it as a positive. The realization is that he’s going to have to understand where to move in the pocket to create some throwing lanes. When you study a Drew Brees, you can see that he’s not a scrambler but he has great sense in the pocket as far as where to move in relation to who he’s throwing to and where the potential throwing lane would be.Russell Wilson’s similar in that aspect as well. Any quarterback that’s in that position has to learn it. Sometimes the only way to learn it is live reps and get the sense of the game when you finally get a chance to get to the film and say, ‘Wow that guy’s wide open, I just didn’t see him,’ that blind faith or that trust has to be information gathered. Where he just has to know he’s going to be there and I have to move and make a throw.”
