NFL Notes: Richard Sherman, Draft, Chiefs, Panthers

Richard Sherman

  • Albert Breer reports that Seahawks CB Richard Sherman won’t be at the team’s offseason workouts on Tuesday, but plans to report in early/mid-May before the start of OTAs.

Draft

Jason Cole of B/R has spoken to GMs around the league who believe picks after No. 1 overall could be relatively cheap to acquire this year.

The reason that the cost to move up could be lower this year is the fact that there are a number of teams including the Jets and 49ers looking to trade down and pick up some selections. Beyond that, there aren’t many players worth moving up the board to get this year.

Interestingly enough, Cole believes teams may be able to trade up for as little as a second-round pick.

Chiefs

Chiefs QB Alex Smith told reporters on Monday that he fully expects the team to bring in another quarterback before the start of training camp.

This is the NFL, I’ve been playing long enough,” Smith said, via the Kansas City Star. “You pretty quickly realize we have three guys right now in the quarterback room, right? We’re a guy short. Someone’s coming in.

“This time of year, QBs are coming in just like every other position. To be honest, it’s a pretty free, open conversation. We talk to the QBs. ‘Hey, who do you like? How’s this guy? How’s that guy?’ You know? And kind of have open conversation.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said also confirmed as much but downplayed that this would have any impact on Smith.

“We have three on the roster now and we’ll see how the fourth one goes or where he comes from,” Reid said. “…Well, we’ve drafted quarterbacks just about every year that we’ve been here, so I don’t think quarterbacks coming through the door is a big deal to him.

Panthers

  • Joel Corry points out that by signing DT Kawann Short to a new five-year, $80 million contract, the Panthers reduced his 2017 salary cap number from $13.387 million under the franchise tag down to $10 million.
