NFL Notes: Sheldon Richardson, Draft, Cardinals, Dolphins

Sheldon Richardson

  • According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, it would be difficult for the Jets to trade DL Sheldon Richardson for a second-round pick right now, but not impossible.
  • Mehta believes the Jets shouldn’t consider trading Richardson for any less than second-rounder. Although, he could see them including Richardson in a package to move up in either the first or second round of this year’s draft.
  • Another option for New York could be to hold onto Richardson this year as insurance in case Muhammad Wilkerson struggles again. From there, they could designate Wilkerson as a post-June 1 cut and then sign Richardson to an extension.

Draft

  • Michigan DE Taco Charlton said he has visited with the Cowboys, Dolphins, Redskins, Lions and the Buccaneers. (SiriusXM NFL Radio)
  • The Steelers brought in Illinois LB Carroll Phillips and Vanderbilt LB Zach Cunningham for pre-draft visits on Friday. (Bob Labriola)
  • The Raiders hosted Baylor WR Ishmael Zamora and UNC WR Mack Hollins for visits this week. (Albert Breer)
  • Connecticut S Obi Melifonwu visited with the Browns on Friday. (Aaron Wilson)
  • Kansas State DE/OLB Jordan Willis visited with the 49ers on Wednesday. (Matt Barrows)
  • New Hampshire RB Dalton Crossan will be in attendance for the Giants’ local prospects day and has worked out for the Seahawks and 49ers. (Jordan Raanan)

Cardinals

Cardinals RB David Johnson said he “definitely” thinks he can handle 30 touches per game.

“I’m still young,” Johnson said, via AzCardinals.com. “I’m still on my first contract. So I feel I can definitely handle 30 touches. I did it last year, basically, with running the ball and catching it out of the backfield.

Dolphins

  • James Walker of ESPN writes that the Dolphins face an interesting decision in the coming weeks regarding former first-round pick RT Ja’Waun James.
  • Miami will have to decide whether to pick up James’ fifth-year option that will run them around $8 million for the 2017 season and while he has been a reliable contributor for Miami, his option would pay him as a dominant right tackle.
  • If the Dolphins don’t pick up his option and he puts together a strong 2017 season, they may have to pay him even more as part of a long-term deal to prevent him from testing the open market.
  • Walker says that the Dolphins and James are unlikely to get a contract extension completed in the next few weeks.
