NFL Notes: Steve Wilks, Bills, Cowboys, Panthers

Steve Wilks

  • According to Jason La Canfora, Norv Turner and Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo are among the offensive coordinator possibilities for Panthers DC Steve Wilks if/when he gets an NFL coaching job.
  • Wilks is interviewing with the Giants Tuesday and New York reportedly has everyone of note in attendance for the meeting in case they want to move quickly on hiring him. (NFLTR)
  • Wilks left New York without a deal, he is scheduled to interview with the Cardinals Wednesday and the Colts on Thursday.

Bills

  • Bills HC Sean McDermott wouldn’t speculate about future of any coaches or players including the status of offensive coordinator Rick Dennison. (Mike Rodak)
  • Regarding the team’s cap situation, GM Brandon Beane said: “We’re in better position than [the previous regime was] a year before. But we’re not out of the woods. We’re still working on it, we’re still massaging it. With some of the moves we’ve made, we still have to eat some dead money. It’s heading in right direction. 2018 was better than 2017. And I foresee 2019 being a little rosier than 2018.” (Mike Rodak)
  • Beane said that they’ve put themselves in a great position for the 2018 draft: “The good thing is we have a lot of draft capital. We can stay there, move up, move back. It’s so early in the process.” (Mike Rodak)

Cowboys

  • According to Todd Archer, Cowboys G Zack Martin had cleanup surgery on his right elbow that will keep him out of the Pro Bowl, but won’t impact his status for the start of the 2018 season.
  • Archer adds that Cowboys DT Maliek Collins also had surgery on his left foot.

Panthers

Regarding the Panthers’ decision to fire OC Mike Shula and QBs coach Ken Dorsey on Tuesday, Panthers HC Ron Rivera explained that he felt the team needed a new perspective in regards to their offense.

“I came to the conclusion going forward the thing we needed to do was bring in a different perspective, different ideas in terms of going forward to what I believe is our ultimate goal and that is winning a Super Bowl,” Rivera said, via ESPN.

To me [this] signals we are looking for an opportunity to continue to grow and get better,” added Rivera. “That’s what this move was made for … something different, something additional, a different perspective that can give us the boost that I’m looking for that will get us to our ultimate goal, and that’s the Super Bowl.
