NFL Notes: Tom Brady, RGIII, & Justin Blackmon

Tom Brady

According to Albert Breer, Judge Berman wanted to bring in some “fresh blood” for Monday’s hearing regarding Tom Brady‘s suspension case, which explains why Giants’ owner John Mara was in attendance.

Brady has reportedly told people involved in the case that he won’t sign anything he sees as untruthful or accept any amount of guilt that stems from the Ted Wells report, per Breer.

Even so, Breer gets the sense that the NFL and Brady’s camp were willing to compromise to some degree.

Breer’s feeling is that Judge Berman could delaying a ruling by a day or two to give the two sides one last chance to settle.

One scenario that has been “consistently floated” is that Berman vacates and tosses the case back to arbitration, which gets it out of the court system, according to Breer.

RGIII

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk offers three reasons why it may actually make sense for the Redskins to keep Robert Griffin III on their roster this season, even though HC Jay Gruden announced that they’re moving forward with Kirk Cousins as the starter.

  1. RGIII‘s salary of $3.249 million isn’t all that crazy for a back quarterback in the NFL right now.
  2. Washington is paying Cousins and fellow backup QB Colt McCoy very limited salaries for the upcoming season.
  3. There’s still a chance the Redskins may need RGIII to play at some point this season in the event that Cousins sustains an injury.

Justin Blackmon

  • Arash Madani of Sportsnet reports that the the Toronto Argonauts have acquired the CFL rights to Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon, who is still suspended indefinitely.
  • Madani mentions that this does not mean Blackmon will be playing for the Argonauts anytime soon, if at all.
  • The Argonauts  also added quarterbacks Cardale Jones, Joe Webb, Tim Tebow, Matt Simms, Braxton Miller, Case Keenum and Troy Flutie to their negotiations list.
