NFL Notes: Tony Romo, Bills, Dolphins, Jets

Tony Romo

Jason La Canfora mentioned during an interview with “Ferrall on the Bench” that Tony Romo and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have yet to sit down and determine what’s going to happen with him moving forward.

“I haven’t been told by anybody – and there’s many people close to him that I trust – that Tony’s expecting anything or that Tony anticipates anything or Tony’s demanding anything,” La Canfora said. “He has not sat down with Jerry Jones yet. He will between now and the Combine at the end of the month, and both sides know that he won’t be there.”

While recent reports have said that Romo is more likely to be released than traded, La Canfora isn’t ruling out a potential trade.

It only takes one team to make a trade,” La Canfora said, “and if you have two teams interested, then you have a robust market. I think they can get a third or a fourth for Tony. And look, Tony is not trying to drive the thing. Tony is not trying to be a dictator. Tony has teams he’d rather be with than not. The four teams he’s most interested in are Houston, Kansas City, Denver and Arizona. It doesn’t meant hose are the only four teams he’ll end up with. There’s a lot that has to happen here before we get to a point that a trade is made, but I do believe there is very legitimate potential to at least get something of note for him.”

Bills

  • Ty Dunne of B/R mentioned that he could see the Bills moving on from QB Tyrod Taylor and going with a veteran stop-gap option like Nick Foles in 2017 and then start over at the position.

Dolphins

  • Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes that one of the reasons why the Dolphins have made the decision to move on from LT Branden Albert is that they expect Laremy Tunsil to take over and excel for them at left tackle. Beyond that, Miami reportedly believes they can find a guard to replace Tunsil at considerably less money that the $8.87 million owed to Albert next season.
  • One free agent G possibility, according to Jackson, could be Patrick Omameh, who worked with HC Adam Gase while they were in Chicago.
  • The Dolphins also cut Earl Mitchell, which leaves Jordan Phillips as the team’s likely starter next to Ndamukong Suh.

Jets

  • Rich Cimini writes that the Jets are interested in re-signing OT Ben Ijalana, but he’s expected to draw interest from other teams.
  • According to Cimini, it’s possible that the Jets could attempt to re-sign QB Geno Smith if they’re unable to sign someone in free agency. Smith would likely have to sign a one-year, prove-it contract to be back in New York. Cimini admits that both sides would probably benefit more from a fresh start.
  • Cimini considers LT Ryan Clady to be a fallback option for the Jets if they can’t find a replacement this offseason.
  • The Jets are interested in re-signing OLB Mike Catapano, according to Cimini.
