NFL Notes: Tony Romo, Draft, 49ers, Cardinals, Chargers

Tony Romo

  • According to Adam Schefter, no one around the NFL knows what will happen specifically with Cowboys QB Tony Romo, but “no one expects him to return.”
  • Schefter list the Texans, Broncos, Cardinals, Chiefs, and Bears as potential landing spots that could make sense for Romo.
  • However, Schefter isn’t sure if the Cowboys will end up releasing Romo for agreeing to a trade involving the veteran quarterback.

Draft

  • A director of college scouting tells Matt Miller that he has Pittsburgh QB Nathan Peterman rated higher than Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer with both prospects being second-round players.
  • Even with the news that Western Michigan WR Corey Davis won’t work out at the Scouting Combine due to a minor ankle surgery (NFLTR), Miller says that he still projects as a first-round talent and potentially a top-10 pick.

49ers

  • While not surprising, sources tell Adam Schefter that QB Colin Kaepernick will be opting out of his contract with the 49ers. (NFLTR)
  • An NFL scout tells Matt Miller of B/R that the decision to bring in Adam Peters as VP of player personnel is a good sign for new GM John Lynch: “Hiring Peters shows Lynch knows his limitations. That’s a huge first step.
  • Interestingly enough, a director of player personnel tells Miller that Jay Cutler is “the forgotten man in all of this” and expects him to land a starting job next season, possibly with the 49ers.

Cardinals

Cardinals OC Harold Goodwin mentioned that they plan to flip offensive tackles next year and play D.J. Humphries at left tackle and Jared Veldheer at right tackle.

“Jared is a team player, D.J. is a team player, so I’m sure we’re going to have a little coach-to-player conversation,” said Goodwin, via Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. “but right now, throwing it out there of my own accord, I think D.J. at left and Jared at right and we’re rolling and kicking butt.”

  • A source with the Cardinals’ scouting staff tells Matt Miller that the Cardinals could still draft a wide receiver in round one, even after the news that Larry Fitzgerald is returning for the 2017 season.
  • Miller’s source explained that drafting a receiver in the first round is still in play due to the loss of Michael Floyd.

Chargers

  • Jason Cole of B/R reports that the Chargers will pay the $12.575 million termination fee to officially terminated their lease with the city of San Diego.
