NFL Notes: Trades, Chiefs, Packers, Rams, Vikings

Trades

Mike Sando of ESPN (Insider) runs through some trades he would like to see take place this offseason including:

  • Bears trading 2017 and 2018 second-round picks to the Patriots for QB Jimmy Garoppolo.
  • Patriots trading CB Malcolm Butler and a 2018 seventh-round to the Dolphins for their 2017 first- and fifth-round picks.
  • Bears trading QB Jay Cutler to either the Jets or 49ers for a 2017 sixth-round pick.
  • Bengals trading backup QB A.J. McCarron to the 49ers for a 2017 sixth-round pick.
  • Vikings trading DT Sharrif Floyd to either the Redskins or Raiders for a 2017 third-round pick.

There are other trades suggested in the article. It’s a great read and worth your time if you’ve got a few minutes.

Chiefs

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt mentioned that he’s “very happy” with Alex Smith as their starting quarterback and expects him to be back with the team in 2017.

“I would just reiterate what Andy has said several times throughout the offseason, which is he’s very happy with Alex and Alex is going to be our starter going into 2017,” Hunt said, via the Kansas City Star.

Packers

  • According to Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the “smart bet” is for Packers GM Ted Thompson to re-sign free agent DB Micah Hyde in the coming weeks.
  • Hyde is really an intriguing free agent, considering that he splits time at both cornerback and safety, but has played a really important role for the Packers in recent years. Cohen doesn’t expect him to get the three-year, $15.3 million contract Casey Hayward signed with the Chargers, but suggests Hyde could be in line for something close to $3 million per year.
  • We have Hyde featured in our Top 100 – 2017 Free Agents list.

Rams

  • Alden Gonzalez of ESPN takes a look at three draft prospects worth monitoring at the Combine this week who could be potential targets for the Rams.
  • Gonzalez’s list includes Ohio State CB Gareon Conley, Alabama OT Cam Robinson and USC WR JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Vikings

  • Jason Cole of B/R reports that Adrian Peterson‘s agents are scheduled to meet with the Vikings at the Scouting Combine this week.
  • The Vikings will owe Peterson a $6 million roster bonus next week, which is part of a $18 million salary owed to Peterson for the 2017 season.
  • According to Cole, the Vikings would like to bring Peterson back next year, but it’s unlikely they’ll do so at that salary.
  • Cole adds that the two sides will have to find common ground this week or Peterson may end up being available in free agency.
