NFL Notes: Trumaine Johnson, Jets, Ravens

Trumaine Johnson

  • Alden Gonzalez reports that the Rams are not expected to sign CB Trumaine Johnson to a long-term extension before today’s deadline.
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter previously reported that Johnson could’ve been traded to the Saints and signed a long-term deal with New Orleans, but he chose to stay ini Los Angeles. (NFLTR)
  • According to Schefter, the Saints were willing to trade what was thought to be a second-round pick for Johnson, but he was unwilling to sign long term, which led to the deal falling apart.

Jets

  • While Rich Cimini of ESPN still considers veteran Josh McCown to be the favorite to open the season as the Jets’ starting quarterback, he says it’s by no means a slam dunk right now.
  • According to Cimini, second-year QB Christian Hackenberg remains in the picture while Bryce Petty is in the background.
  • Hackenberg did take some “baby steps” during minicamp, but Cimini says there’s still a gap between him and McCown.
  • Cimini believes the Jets organization will be in better shape if Hackenberg proves he’s worthy of the starting job this summer.

Ravens

Ravens QB Joe Flacco likes what Danny Woodhead brings to their offense, given that they haven’t had a player like him since they lost Ray Rice a few years ago.

“Really, ever since we lost Ray Rice, we haven’t had a type of back that’s quite like how Ray was and quite like how Danny is in the passing game,” Flacco said, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “They just have a very good feel for when they’re open and how to get open, how to sit in holes, how to find my eyes, and you can already see that. You can see he has a really good feel for those kinds of things. If you remember back, obviously, Ray was really good at doing that, and that gives a lot to your offense for sure.

Woodhead says it didn’t take very long to get on the same page as Flacco.

It was a lot faster than I expected, so I’m pleased with that,” Woodhead said. “But there is a lot more that we have to do. In order to be great, we have to keep progressing. That is what we want to do: We want to be great; we want to be the best.
