NFL Owners Expected To Push To Finalize Roger Goodell’s Extension This Week

According to Jason La Canfora, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s new contract extension could be finalized this week.

La Canfora reports there is a “strong sentiment” among many owners to get the matter fully resolved ahead of the Dec. 13 meeting.

“It could happen really fast after the committee meetings,” an ownership source tells La Canfora of Goodell’s extension.

While Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that he expects NFL owners to discuss Goodell’s new contract at the owners meeting, La Canfora mentions that Jones is not in a position to dictate the protocol at this point and several powerful owners believe the matter can be resolved this week during a Compensation Committee meeting.

League sources have told La Canfora that Falcons owner Arthur Blank, the chair of the Compensation Committee who was livid over Jones’ recent antics. Jones reportedly has support from Redskins owner Dan Snyder and Colts owner Jim Irsay but overall his powerbase is quite limited on this issue.

Last week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that if Goodell is able to reach the bonus criteria included in the contract, he would earn $40 million over the course of five years, making this a five-year extension worth up $200 million. A source tells Schefter that Goodell’s base salary is “in the single digits” and roughly 85 percent of the potential compensation package is comprised of bonuses.

We’ll have more regarding a new deal for Goodell as the news is available.
