NFL Rumors: 49ers, Bears, Lions & Packers

49ers

  • 49ers GM Trent Baalke said he has had “discussions with several teams” regarding QB Colin Kaepernick, but “it’s gone no farther than that.” (Paul Gutierrez)
  • Baalke said of their approach towards free agency: “We haven’t done much. We’re a draft and develop team.” (Paul Gutierrez)
  • Baalke added that the only big-money deal he’s made in the first-wave free agency over the past five years was signing WR Torrey Smith last year. (Paul Gutierrez)

Bears

  • Bears GM Ryan Pace said he considers this to be a good draft overall while adding that he’s very happy they were able to add a fourth-round pick in Martellus Bennett trade. (Adam Jahns)
  • According to Pace, said there were other teams interested in trading for Bennett before they struck a deal with the Patriots. (Adam Jahns)
  • Pace mentioned that WR Kevin White is 100 percent healthy. (Adam Jahns)

Lions

  • Lions president Rod Wood said he’d be surprised if WR Calvin Johnson unretired and returned to either Detroit or any other team. (Kyle Meinke)
  • Lions GM Bob Quinn said he has not engaged any trade talks about an offensive lineman. (Kyle Meinke)
  • Quinn added that Riley Reiff is their left tackle “as of today.” (Kyle Meinke)
  • In regards to veteran LB Stephen Tulloch still being on their roster, Quinn said: “We’re still working on that.” (Kyle Meinke)
  • Quinn did, however, say that Tulloch remains on their roster because of a contractual issue, but he didn’t offer any details beyond that. (Kyle Meinke)
  • According to Quinn, they re-signed LB Tahir Whitehead with the intention of him being their middle linebacker. (Kyle Meinke)
  • Quinn mentioned that extension talks with their 2013 draft picks probably won’t heat up until after the draft. (Tim Twentyman)

Packers

  • Packers HC Mike McCarthy said he spent quite a bit of time with free agent TE Jared Cook during his visit last week. (Rob Demovsky)
  • McCarthy confirmed they are, in fact, moving on from veteran WR James Jones, but they wanted to move forward with some of their younger guys. (Rob Demovsky)
  • McCarthy said he thinks DT B.J. Raji will play again, but wasn’t sure when that will be: “It would have to be at the right time.” (Rob Demovsky)
  • When asked about the money being spent in free agency, McCarthy said: “[I]t’s good not to be in that position where you feel you have to do that.” (Rob Demovsky)
