Vittorio Tafur San Francisco Chronicle ranks all 32 in terms of those are affected the most by the NFL labor uncertainty. Tafur adds that the chances of the 49ers retaining Alex Smith for another year are better than many may think.
“The only reason Jim Harbaugh has been talking up Alex Smith is that the labor uncertainty could leave Smith as his only real option. The new coaching staff’s hands are tied with a roster that’s a mess, writes Tafur.”
Earlier reports mentioned 49ers new head coach Jim Harbaugh has already spent time with Alex Smith discussing offensive schemes which is sign of the teams interest in retaining him. Harbaugh has even said that he likes Smith and thinks that he can be an effective quarterback.
There is still a chance that San Francisco could draft a quarterback with their No. 7 overall pick but several draft experts see the 49ers taking a different position and possibly grabbing a quarterback in the second or third-round.
If Harbaugh elects to stick with Smith at quarterback, it will be interesting to see how the teams fan base reacts to the decision given their distaste for him.
