NFL Rumors: Alex Smith As The 49ers 2011 QB?

Following San Francisco’s largely disappointing 2010 season, it seemed as though Alex Smith had played his last game as 49er. Strangely enough, since then there have been several reports that 49ers new head coach Jim Harbaugh is considering bringing him back for next year.

Matt Maiocco of Comcast Bay Area reports that Smith and Harbaugh have already met several times and have even worked on fundamental drills at the teams practice facility.

“I’ve had a couple meetings with him,” Harbaugh said. “It’s been good. And I look forward to continuing that [this week] when he’s back in town.”

Just in case you didn’t believe that earlier reports, it appears that Harbaugh is serious about bringing Smith back despite G.M. Trent Baalke earlier comments in which he mentioned that the 49ers future quarterback wasn’t currently on their roster.

This news may come to the dismay of the 49ers fans who have been forced to watch Alex Smith struggle throughout his time in San Francisco. Maybe the seventh new offensive coordinator will be the charm.
