NFL Rumors: Cardinals Passing On A Quarterback At No. 5?

It’s been widely assumed that the Arizona Cardinals, who hold the No. 5 overall pick, would be targeting a quarterback in this years draft. Over a month ago it was reported that the team owners had visited with Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert which was taken as a strong indication that the Cardinals were considering taking him in the first-round but that may not actually be the case.

ESPN’s Mike Sando, the Arizona Republic’s Kent Somers and AzCardinals.com’s Darren Urban all see Arizona going in a different direction. Even head coach Ken Whisenhunt doesn’t appear to sold on the idea.

“There is nobody that really stands out like Sam Bradford did last year. There are a lot of guys that are intriguing athletically like Blaine Gabbert, like Cam Newton, because of the skill set, some of the things they can do. But I don’t think they have shown the ability to do some of the things that you have seen in the past by some of these guys like a Matt Ryan or, obviously, like a Sam Bradford,” said Whisenhunt during an interview with XTRA910 radio in Phoenix.

Draft experts may differ but there remains a good chance that Arizona turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball once they are on the clock next Thursday.
