NFL Rumors: Carolina Not Franchising DeAngelo Williams?

We discussed the possibility of Carolina franchising DeAngelo Williams a few days ago but the Gaston Gazette is reporting that a league source has told them that the Panthers are not set on the idea of using the franchise tag on Williams.

The Panthers will have to make a number of decisions regarding their free agents-to-be, specifically RB DeAngelo Williams, C Ryan Kalil, and DE Charles Johnson. Carolina will have a franchise and transitional tag at their disposal which means that even if they choose to franchise a more cost-efficient player like Ryan Kalil they will still have the option to use a transitional tag on DeAngelo Williams. Whoever gets the transitional tag can still be had by any team that’s willing to offer him a multi-year contract.

This could be good news for teams like the Miami Dolphins who are said to have Williams at the top of their offseason priority list. Despite this new, it would still be surprising to see them pass on franchising DeAngelo because of the amount of money that they would be on the hook for.

Side Note: The NFLPA has disputed the NFL’s claim that the franchise tag will be available to teams after the Super Bowl but added that they would only pursue action if a player was opposed to receiving the tag.
