NFL Rumors: Carolina Hoping To Keep DeAngelo Williams?

The Carolina Panthers did what everyone expected them to do last night and drafted Cam Newton No. 1 overall. Head coach Ron Rivera thinks that Newton can not only be an effective quarterback in the league but he thinks that Newton’s play making ability should allow the running game to open for players like DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

“If the defense crashes down on the line of scrimmage, he can bootleg outside and make something happen,” said Rivera. “If they honor that too much, then DeAngelo (Williams) cuts back on the backside and breaks it for a 60-yard gain.”

Obviously, Rivera is hoping that the Williams will be a restricted-free agent once the rules for free agency are finally in place. From everything we’ve heard, there’s a really good chance that the requirements for unrestricted free agency will be set at six years of service which would make a number of players restricted free agents rather than able to test the market.

DeAngelo has already said that he would like to remain in Carolina but then again he’s said that Miami would be nice as well so we’ll update this story sometime early next week when we know more.
