NFL Rumors: Chargers Locking Up Vincent Jackson?

Less than a year ago, the situation between Vincent Jackson and San Diego Chargers appeared to be irreparable but as the season went on Jackson finally joined the team and looked as good as in previous years.

The Chargers announced that they have made the decision to frachise Jackson for the upcoming season which should give them an opportunity to sign Jackson to a longterm contract. Chargers GM A.J. Smith discussed the idea of a possible longterm contract for Jackson today.

“I’m comfortable with not giving him a long-term deal right now and we are not negotiating a long-term deal,” said Smith, per the San Diego Union-Tribune. “We’ll see how the year goes, but not at the present time.”

After reading Smiths comments you would assume that this isn’t a good indication that an agreement will be reached but the fact that Smith isn’t ruling out the idea down the road suggests that he has changed his approach from last season when he wouldn’t even consider the idea.

Surrounding Phillip Rivers will playmakers will be important to the teams future success. Antonio Gates is getting older and seems to always be playing through an injury of some sort so signing Jackson could help solidify their offense for years to come, if their able to come to some sort of an agreement.
