NFL Rumors: Chargers Plans For Eric Weddle

Now that the Chargers have grabbed S Bob Sanders at the last minute, they can now make a decision regarding their previous safety Eric Weddle.

Weddle has already made it known that he would like to remain in San Diego.

““I’m looking forward to the future,” Weddle told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “I think everything will work out. If I’m here, I’m here. If not, then I’m not. I love being in San Diego, but it’s not the reason I’ll stay. My wife and kids loving San Diego won’t keep us here. If it’s not where it’s at, I can leave in a heartbeat.”

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune mentions that the Chargers plan on building their secondary around Weddle so there’s a chance a deal could get done. It’s just strange to see them sign Sanders before even approaching Weddle.

So far there haven’t been any talks regarding a possible extension which seems like the Chargers are not interested in paying him market value. If Weddle does hit the free agent market there’s a good chance that he could get up to $7 million per season.

Two teams that jump out as possible options for him are the Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both have serious needs at the position and should be willing to pay him top dollar to solidify the safety position.

“I ultimately think it will get done and I’ll be here,” Weddle said. “But by no means, if it’s way off, I’m not going to be here.”
