NFL Rumors: Cowboys Options At Safety

The Dallas Cowboys secondary appears to be ready for an overhaul, more specifically the safety positions. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon chimed in on the situation by suggesting that the Cowboys could target a strong safety in the draft but will consider bringing in a veteran free safety.

“Just a hunch, but the Cowboys might have their hopes set on Michael Huff, an Irving Nimitz and Texas product who has started to live up to his potential as a top-10 pick after a few disappointing seasons at the beginning of his career. Rob Ryan was the Oakland Raiders’ defensive coordinator when they drafted Huff seventh overall in 2006. Huff, 28, is an elite coverage safety with a knack for blitzing. He’d be a tremendous upgrade over Alan Ball,” writes MacMahon.

Adding Michael Huff would be a step in the right direction for the teams defense. It seem like there is always a lot made about a coaches previous experience with a player but it doesn’t seem like it makes a huge difference in the end. It’s a good fit but we’ll have to see how things play out.

As for the idea about drafting a strong safety, it also a great move on paper. Hopefully, the Cowboys do better job of developing this player than they have done with other defensive draft picks not named Demarcus Ware.
