The Dallas Cowboys have already begun the process of changing their defensive philosophy by bringing in Rob Ryan as their defensive coordinator a weeks ago. While the Cowboys could use upgrades to their defensive line and line-backing core, it’s their secondary that is in need of the most attention.
Probably the most glaring issue for Dallas’s secondary is Terence Newman who is set to make a staggering $8 million for the 2011 season. Considering the position that he plays, safety, and the fact that he’s going to be 33 by the time the season starts, it would see fairly logical that he will not be brought back.
Interestingly, that’s not how Dallascowboys.com sees it. The site mentions that Newman out played both Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick for the majority of the 2010 and his veteran presence is another asset worthy of consideration. They do concede that if the Cowboys are able to land one of Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara with their No. 9 overall pick it would allow them to move on without Newman.
While I think that they have made some valid points about Newmans value to the team, it’s really the $8 million salary that is the biggest problem for the Cowboys. That kind of money could be used fill a number of other rosters holes. Dallas would be better served getting players that are going to contribute for the multiple seasons rather than maintaining a better than average player.
