NFL Rumors: DT Options For The Denver Broncos

As we have already discussed in our NFL Draft Grades, the Denver Broncos did a great job of adding talent to their struggling defense from a year ago during this years draft. But what they failed to address was the defensive tackle position.

Woody Paige of the Denver Post tosses out a few veteran options that the Broncos could consider bringing in once free agency is open. Paige lists Barry Cofield, Cullen Jenkins and Brandon Mebane as three players to consider.

Brandon Mebane is likely to restricted free agent, Cullen Jenkins has struggled to stay on the field in recent years and seems like a better fit for a 3-4 defense which leaves Barry Cofield as the mostly likely of three. There’s still a chance that he could be a restricted free agent but he seems ready to move on from Denver and managed to be productive for the Giants.

One player that Paige didn’t mention is 49ers DT Aubrayo Franklin who is guaranteed to be an unrestricted free agent. While Franklin is going to be 31 at the start of the season, he could provide them some run support. He’s use to a 3-4 scheme so he’s not a perfect fit but he could be an option.
