NFL Rumors: Kevin Kolb Looking For Big Money?

In any other season the Philadelphia Eagles would have one of the hottest trade chips on their hands considering that nearly one-third of NFL teams are in need of a quarterback which just happens to be a position of strength for the Eagles.

Philadelphia’s backup QB Kevin Kolb has been a regular to the NFL rumor mill for sometime now but his value could actually be declining rather than increasing because of a few different factors. The first factor to consider is that in order for any team to acquire Kolb, they would have to be willing to part with multiple draft picks which likely includes one first-round selection. On top of that they would have to sign Kolb to a lucrative contract because of the fact that he’s set to become a free agent following the 2011 season. That’s already a huge price for any player and especially for a guy that has less than ten NFL starts.

Tom Pelissero of ESPN 1500 Twin Cities is reporting that Kolbs agents have indicated that Kolb will be looking for a deal that’s larger than Matt Schaubs six-year, $48M deal and more in the range of of $65-70 million which would put him in the same company as Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo.

The idea is just crazy when you consider the small sample size of NFL experience that teams will have to base their decision on. Draft picks are as valuable as ever so adding them to a deal that’s going to require a huge contract makes very little sense. Teams would be better served drafting a player with the first-round pick that they would be giving up for him rather pay such a high cost.

There’s no way I pay him like a proven guy,” said an executive in personnel for an AFC team. “If you give up a one, that’s your guy. You’re going to ride with him, so you’re going to pay him. But you’ve still got to make sure that the finances are such that it’s based on what he’s proven. Whether you’re dealing with the agent or not, he has to understand I’m paying part of the price in draft picks.

It seemed like just a matter of time before Kolb was playing for a new team but this news on top of the current labor situation makes it seem as though it’s as far fetched as ever. Either the Eagles will have to lower their asking price or Kolb will have to adjust his salary requirements in order to get a deal done once a new CBA is in place.
