NFL Rumors: Latest On Asomugha’s Options

ESPN’s Adam Schefter discussed some of the most likely destinations for Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi Asomugha during a recent mailbag. Schefter sees the Cowboys, Redskins and Eagles as the most obvious options for him but also lists the Buccaneers, Texans, Jets and Ravens as other teams to consider.

Asomugha is the top free agent available. Every single team in the league would want him, but there are only a handful of realistic destinations for him. My sense is that topping the list are three NFC East teams: Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington. Each could use a superior cornerback, failed to land a frontline cornerback in last month’s draft, has shown the ability to spend money in the past and will not want to see Asomugha on a division rival,” writes Schefter.

By passing on a cornerback in the draft, Philadelphia and Dallas figure to be actively pursuing Asomugha, who just happens to be the best available option.

The Detroit Lions are another team that has been linked to Asomugha in the past few months but the rumors surrounding the idea have died down in recent weeks. The Lions were able to upgrade their defensive line in the draft by taking Nick Fairley but their secondary still needs a solid player which they shouldn’t be ruled out of the Asmougha sweepstakes just yet.

I could see both the Texans and Buccaneers checking in on Nnamdi but it would be surprising to see them make an aggressive play for his services.

Houston drafted CB’s Brandon Harris and Rashad Carmichael a few weeks ago so they’ve already allocated some resources to the position. Tampa Bay also drafted a cornerback, Anthony Gaitor, but he was taken in the seventh-round so they’re likely to look around.
