NFL Rumors: Latest On Carson Palmer

Just in case you thought that the Carson Palmer was using retirement as a bluff strategy, Clark Judge of CBSSports.com reports that two sources are convinced that the Palmer is more than willing to retire rather than return to Cincinnati.

Judge writes that a source close to Palmer informed him that the members of the Bengals coaching staff met with Palmer recently and were told that he will in fact retire if he is not traded during the offseason.

“There’s a peace about him with this decision,” one source explained to Judge.

The Bengals have made it known that they plan on having Palmer for next season but that seems as unlikely as re-signing to an extension would be. Cincinnati finds themselves in a similar situation as they were in when Boomer Esiason was demanding a trade out of town. Keeping Palmer will no doubt make them a better for the next season but once again the goal is to be the best team, not a team that’s fighting for a winning record. Trading Palmer isn’t a bad idea considering that good quarterbacks are in high demand right now. Draft picks are as valuable as gold in the NFL so moving him for some added draft picks would allow them build a better nucleus for the coming years. Fans aren’t hoping for more mediocrity from a team that hasn’t won a playoff game in over 20 years, there hoping for a real chance to compete.
