NFL Rumors: Nick Mangold, Tony Romo, 49ers, Patriots, Redskins

Nick Mangold

  • Dan Graziano reports that NFL teams that have expressed interest so far in free agent C Nick Mangold have asked if him if he’s willing to move to guard.
  • According to Graziano, Mangold has resisted up to this point and is instead waiting for an opportunity to continue his career at center.

Tony Romo

  • Jason Cole spoke with one team that is interested in signing QB Tony Romo who said that he will likely have to accept a low base salary of around $6-$8 million to go along with per-game incentives.

49ers

  • Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that the 49ers will not tender offers to restricted free agent RB DuJuan Harris, CB Marcus Cromartie or DB Chris Davis.
  • This, of course, means that both players will be unrestricted free agents as of Thursday.

Patriots

  • According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, the Patriots will use a first=round restricted tender on CB Malcolm Butler that will cost them $3.91 million for the 2017 season.
  • Reiss doesn’t rule out the Patriots and Butler attempting to get a long-term extension in place before the start of the season.
  • Reiss projects OT Cameron Fleming to get a low-round tender worth $1.797 million.

Redskins

Mike Jones of the Washington Post mentioned during an appearance on 106.7 The Fan Monday that the rumored three-team trade involving the 49ers, Cowboys and Redskins may have been floated in an attempt to distract from the dysfunction regarding Washington’s front office.

The week was bad,” Jones said, via Pro Football Talk. “They were taking hits left and right from a P.R. standpoint. Everybody in the league was talking about them. I mean . . . people from other teams, not reporters, would see me and be like, ‘What’s going on with Washington?’ Everybody was wondering what the heck was the deal. And you even had agents saying that they didn’t know if they wanted to send their guys there. Agents who met with the Redskins about re-signing, saying like, ‘Who’s in charge there?’

“Ultimately, Bruce [Allen] kind of was like, ‘All right, we gotta do something, because my fake Ian Rapoport Redskins three-way trade thing didn’t work to change the story . . . so let’s sign Jay [Gruden] to an extension.
