NFL Rumors: Panthers Hesitant About Drafting Cam Newton?

As soon as you think that the Carolina Panthers are set on the idea of drafting Cam Newton No. 1 overall, there is a report from Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com that suggests that the Panthers owner Jerry Richardson isn’t “sold on” the idea.

“Owner Jerry Richardson still isn’t completely sold on Newton,”  Freeman writes.   “Still, Richardson will likely defer to his personnel staff, and many of them have met with Newton, and like him.”

The most important as apect of this report is Richardson’s willingness to defer the decision to his staff rather than make the decision himself. There’s always going to be someone that’s uneasy about the idea of investing in a player but that usually has more to do with the risks that come with making such a large decision. The fact that there isn’t a home run player in this years draft doesn’t make this decision any easier. When you’re sitting at No. 1 overall, it’s because your team is in bad shape so you really can’t afford to miss on this move. Despite the concerns, taking Newton pays off in multiple ways immediately but he’s not a sure-thing.

I’d really be surprised if the Panthers get cold feet on Newton.
