NFL Rumors: Texans Using Mario Williams As An OLB?

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle discussed the Houston Texans plans for DE Mario Williams and suggested that defensive coordinator Wade Phillips intends to use him at OLB rather than his normal position, DE.

This was one of the first topics discussed when the team made the decision to bring in Phillips to implement a 3-4 defensive scheme. Phillips said that he plans on using Williams much the way he used DeMarcus Ware in Dallas.

“He’ll be up in running situations and down in passing situations. Sometimes they might change him around,” McClain writes.

The Texans drafted DE J.J. Watt who will be used at DE and OLB Brooks Reed who should line up across from Watt or get moved around from time to time. On paper, Houston has staggering front seven that includes: J.J. Watt, Amobi Okoye, Mario Williams, Brian CushingDeMeco Ryans, Brooks Reed, and Connor Barwin. The secondary remains a concern but recent rumors have suggested that they’ll be targeting a safety in free agency.

You have to love what the Texans have done so far but making a transition to a 3-4 defense usually takes a year but then again not many teams have been able to get this kind of talent in place as fast as Houston has.
