NFL Teams Not Showing Interest In Aldon Smith, League Conducting Investigation

Chris Mortensen of ESPN has spoken to a few NFL general managers, and while some have taken risks in the past with players, none of them indicated that they’re prepared to pursue former 49ers OLB Aldon Smith.

  • According to Mortensen, the NFL is currently investigating Smith’s arrest in which he was involved in a hit and run, DUI, and vandalism.
  • Pro Football Talk mentioned earlier in the day that Smith‘s latest arrest involves both substance-abuse policy and Personal Conduct Policy, which could lead to “significant” suspension.

It’s worth mentioning that Smith won’t need to clear waivers before becoming an unrestricted free agent, but with the league looking into the situation and this being just the latest off-the-field issue, it seems likely that NFL teams will at least wait and see what transpires over the next few months.

Smith, 25, had his fifth-year option picked up by the 49ers last year, but he agreed to rework the deal so that a large majority of the contract would have be paid out through a series of roster bonuses.

In 2014, Smith appeared in seven games and recorded 15 tackles and two sacks for the 49ers’ defense. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent next year, so he clearly has a lot to prove in 2015.

We’ll have more regarding Smith and his future in the NFL as the news is available.
