NFL Unlikely To Suspend Broncos CB Aqib Talib, Barring New Evidence

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Broncos CB Aqib Talib is not expected to be disciplined by NFL for an incident that occurred this summer and resulted in him being shot.

Rapoport qualifies this by saying it will depend on whether new evidence is presented by the police department investigating the matter.

Back in August, Dallas police had yet to rule out the possibility that Talib shot himself in the leg.

“The case is still open and under investigation and detectives have not ruled out the possibility that Talib shot himself,” said Senior Cpl. Tramese Andrews with Dallas Police.

Talib was actually one of three people shot during the incident at a Dallas nightclub. Talib told police at the time that he was shot at Hamilton Park, but a police report shows that he told them he was “too intoxicated to remember what happened.”

The situation could lead to Talib facing punishment for possession of a gun if he wasn’t licensed to carry in the state of Texas. Carrying a weapon while intoxicated is a Class A misdemeanor is considered a third-degree felony.

Some thought the NFL could suspend Talib for as many as eight games, considering that he’s had multiple off-the-field incidents like this since entering the league.

Talib, 30, is in the third year of his six-year, $57 million contract that includes $26 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $8.5 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Talib appeared 15 games for the Broncos and recorded 45 tackles, three interceptions with two of them bring returned for touchdowns, and 14 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 cornerback out of 111 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Talib and potential discipline from the league as the news is available.
