No QB Competition In San Francisco, Alex Smith Will Be Their Starter Next Season

According to 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, Colin Kaepernick will not be competing with Alex Smith for the team’s starting quarterback job this year, via the San Jose Mercury News.

It was previously reported that Kaepernick would have an opportunity to win the job during training camp, but that was before they re-signed Smith to a three-year, $24 million contract. It was obviously was assumed that Smith would be retained, but Harbaugh reportedly wasn’t willing to commit to him being their starter outright.

This was apparently inaccurate as San Francisco looks to build on their successful 2011 season with Smith entrenched as their starter. Harbaugh and 49ers like Kaepernick’s long-term prospects, but it makes sense to stick with Smith for at least one more season, considering that they were arguably a fumble away from the Super Bowl last year.
