Osi Umenyiora Holdout Update

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the New York Giants and DE Osi Umenyiora‘s representation are working on some sort of compromise to bring an end to the impasse that has been playing out over the last week or so.

So far the Giants have offered to include incentives in Umenyiora’s current deal that would payout once he reached the 13.5 sacks mark. Last year only four players (DeMarcus WareTamba HaliCameron Wake and Clay Matthews) managed to reach that total while Umenyiora finished with two shy with 11.5 sacks. In fact Umenyiora has only reach or gone over 13.5 sacks once in his seven-year career.

Umenyiora’s representation has asked that the final year of his contract be voided if they agree to these terms.

Overall it seems like a reasonable deal for both sides as the Giants would ensure that Umenyiora remains productive in his final season while he would be allowed to seek the longterm contract that he is currently seeking.
