Packers Are Not Expected To Cut Donald Driver Or Chad Clifton

It was believed that the Packers would be looking to shed some salary during the offseason by releasing some of the aging veterans like WR Donald Driver and OT Chad Clifton, but Packers head coach Mike McCarthy seemed to suggest that that’s not going to happen, according to  Tom Silverstein.

McCarthy did mention that Clifton will end up being a medical decision after he had surgery on his hip during the offseason. This means that there’s still a chance that he could be released before the start of training camp. As for Driver, McCarthy said that there’s “absolutely” room on the roster for him and mentioned that he “played very well down the stretch” for the Packers.

Green Bay has a deep receiving core but they also have two solid receiving prospects on their practice squad in Tori Gurley and Shaky Smithson, both of whom have received offers from other teams. It’ll be interesting to see if either of them forces the Packers to reconsider keeping Driver for another season.
