Packers Cutting LT Chad Clifton & WR Donald Driver So They Can Tag Flynn?

Now that the Packers have reached an agreement with TE Jermichael Finley, the attention turns to QB Matt Flynn. The idea that Green Bay could use their franchise tag on Flynn and trade him for draft picks has been floated for some time now, but it finally looks like a plausible option for the team.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel mentions that he does expect that Packers to tag Flynn and adds that a trade could happen within the first few days of free agency.

After signing Finley, the team is sitting with $10 – $13 million in cap space but they will have to clear some extra room because the tag for quarterbacks comes out to $14.4 million in 2012. The Packers will also have to find a team that’s willing trade for him before they can feel confident in executing such a move.

Silverstein writes that the team can clear $10 million in cap room simply by parting ways with LT Chad Clifton and WR Donald Driver.

They have plenty to sort out in the coming weeks but at least they’ll have some options that wouldn’t have existed had Finley demanded that he receive a long-term contract.
