Packers & DL Mike Daniels Still Far Apart In Contract Talks

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers and DL Mike Daniels have made “little headway” in contract negotiations over the past few months.

According to McGinn, the Packers view Daniels as their top priority when it comes to their group of 14 players set to be unrestricted free agents next year.

Daniels is reportedly seeking in the neighborhood of $10 million per year, but the Packers have been offering several million less per year.

“I haven’t heard anything,” Daniels said of the contract talks. “I don’t want to really get involved. Think about it. Am I going to worry about a contract when I got Peyton Manning across from me?

An NFL personnel director seems to think $10 million is a fair price for guy who has been as disruptive as Daniels has been for Green Bay.

“Why wouldn’t he get $10 (million)?” the personnel director told McGinn. “Most of those guys are bigger, but who’s more disruptive?

“I think Mike Daniels is a good player. I think he and Liuget are on a par. The way that market goes, you’re going to overpay. It he goes to free agency, do you (the Packers) want to run that risk?

Daniels, 26, is in the final year of his four-year, $2.401 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season.

There’s no question that Daniels is the Packers best interior pass-rusher and is in line for a sizable contract extension.

This season, Daniels has appeared in seven games and recorded 22 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble for the Packers. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 defensive end in a 3-4 defense out of 51 qualifying players.
