Packers Exec. Brian Gutekunst No Longer Pursuing 49ers GM Job, Signs New Deal With GB

Adam Schefter reports that Packers executive Brian Gutekunst is no longer pursuing the 49ers’ GM position and will instead remain in Green Bay.

  • Ian Rapoport adds that Gutekunst has signed a new deal with the Packers.

This comes as a pretty big surprising, considering that several reports have said for a few weeks now that Gutekunst was the favorite to be hired as the 49ers’ next GM.

On Thursday, fellow Packers’ executive Eliot Wolf also withdrew his name from the 49ers’ GM search, so it appears as though Green Bay has done a good job of keeping their front office intact, despite serious interest from other teams.

Matt Barrows mentions that Gutekunst and Wolf’s decision to pull out of the running for the position could be viewed as a sign that the 49ers plan to give Kyle Shanahan full control of the 53-man roster.

There are still some notable candidates for the 49ers’ position including Vikings executive George Paton and Cardinals executive Terry McDonough. Both could meet with the 49ers next week for follow-up interviews along with Shanahan.

One interesting possibility could be hiring Mike Shanahan as the team’s general manager and pairing him with his son.

We’ll have more regarding the 49ers’ GM position as the news is available.
