Packers File Paperwork To Recoup Portion Of Martellus Bennett’s Signing Bonus

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers have officially filed paperwork in an attempt to collect a portion of Martellus Bennett‘s signing bonus after they cut him loose with a failure to disclose medical condition designation.

The NFLPA tells Demovsky that they are “aware of the situation and currently monitoring.

Green Bay paid Bennett a $6.3 million signing bonus as part of his three-year, $21 million contract. However, he managed to play seven games this season, which means it’s more likely that the Packers will target the remaining $4.2 million that’s prorated over the final two years of the deal.

Demovsky adds that the case between the Packers and Bennett will be heard by an arbitrator and need to be settled before next season because of the salary-cap ramifications.

Bennett has been dealing with a shoulder injury, but was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Bennett, 30, is a former second-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2008. He’s currently in the first year of his three-year, $21 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $3.6 million and $5.65 million over the next two years of the agreement.

The Packers elected to waive Bennett with a failure to disclose medical condition designation a few weeks ago and he was later claimed off of waivers by the Patriots.

In 2017, Bennett appeared in nine games and caught 30 passes for 286 yards receiving and no touchdowns for the Packers and Patriots.
