Packers Fire Special Teams Coordinator Shawn Slocum

The Green Bay Packers announced Friday that they have parted ways with special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum.

I would like to thank Shawn for all of his contributions over the past nine years,” HC Mike McCarthy said in a statement. “He was a positive contributor to our success, including helping us win Super Bowl XLV. We wish Shawn, Michelle and their family the best moving forward.”

McCarthy seemed to leave the door open for changes to be made to their coaching staff in the coming weeks, and given their special teams performance in recent years, this move shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.

It’s important to evaluate,” said McCarthy on Wednesday. “I obviously haven’t had that opportunity. So we’ll look at everything. We’ll look at every job description, every job responsibility, performance – mine included – and we’ll look to make changes.

“Special teams has been no different than offense and defense,” McCarthy added. “It comes down to healthy scheme, knowing your opponent. You’re looking for the personnel matchups and ultimately executing the fundamentals. Our special-team errors have been critical more because of the timing of it. It definitely showed up in the Seattle game.”

Rob Demovksy points out that it’s interesting that at this point special teams assistant coach Ron Zook remains on Packers staff.

We’ll have to see if Zook remains with the team moving forward or if they look outside of the organization for a replacement.
