Packers GM Ted Thompson Could Step Aside After The Season?

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Packers GM Ted Thompson could step aside and become a senior scouting adviser to the team, despite being under contract for another two years.

According to Rapoport, a playoff run from the Packers would likely increase the possibility of Thompson stepping aside.

Some of the reason for this, according to Rapoport, are the fact Director of Football Operations Eliot Wolf will be a coveted GM candidate with other teams and the franchise runs the risk of losing him should they not promote him. Beyond that, Packers CEO Mark Murphy still hasn’t hired anyone for the position, despite being with the team for several years.

Other notable front members of the Packers include V.P. Russ Ball, Director of Player Personnel Brian Gutekunst and Senior Personnel Executive Alonzo Highsmith.

Earlier in the year, Jason La Canfora reported that changes could be coming to the Packers’ front office after the season.

“Internally, there are concerns about the output from recent drafts and numerous position groups that are not as strong as they once were, so long-time general manager Ted Thompson is not immune to review,” La Canfora wrote. “How long Thompson, 63, wants to continue doing this job already was the source of conjecture, and should the team not pull out of its tailspin, some team sources believe the club’s board of directors could oversee front-office changes.

Thompson, 63, took over as Packers’ general manager back in 2005 and has led the team to a record of 117-73-1 over the course of 12 seasons. This includes eight playoff appearances and one Super Bowl title back in 2010.

We’ll have more regarding the Packers as the news is available.
