Packers Likely Have Had “Preliminary” Extension Talks With Randall Cobb

ESPN writer Rob Demovsky was asked if the Packers intend to wait until the offseason to address WR Randall Cobb‘s contract.

Demovsky mentions that it could be Cobb who wants to wait until the season is over given that this would allow him more time to continue to improve his stock before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

According to Demovsky, “it’s likely there already have been preliminary talks between the Packers and Cobb’s agent, Jimmy Sexton.

Cobb mentioned a few months ago that he doesn’t believe he has done enough to warrant an extension from the team.

I don’t believe I’ve done enough, and I think that’s on me,” said Cobb, via Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin. “Last year, I missed 10 weeks, I got injured in a way that there was nothing I could do about it. I think my job is just to come out here every day, do what I’m supposed to, continue to work hard and hopefully my time will come.”

Green Bay locked up WR Jordy Nelson to a four-year extension shortly before these comments were made, but Demovsky interprets the receiver’s response as though “he had not done enough to get the kind of money he wants.”

“I feel I have a lot to prove,” Cobb added. “I know the player I’m capable of being. And it’s just going out and showing that on a day-to-day basis.”

Cobb, 24, is in the final year of his rookie contract and stands to make just $812,648 for the 2014 season. Over the course of five games, Cobb has caught 24 passes for 273 yards receiving and six touchdowns.

If he were to reach the open market, there is no question that Cobb would be among the most sort after players in free agency.
