Packers Looking To Add A “Lead Back” During The Offseason

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes that “there’s a feeling among some in the organization” that need to find a lead running back versus the committee approach that they’ve been employing.

Silverstein mentions that Rams RB Steven Jackson, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the coming months, “would be ideal.” Silverstein he adds that the Packers would only have interest in him in the secondary market because of his age.

According to Silverstein, it’s “doubtful” that either Cedric Benson or Ryan Grant will be brought back for another season and DuJuan Harris is viewed as a “change-of-pace back.

There’s no question that the Packers are in need of a foundation running back that can be relied upon to produce consistent production. Jackson is really the only running back in the free agent market that could even be considered a true featured back, but he appears to be focused on signing a long-term extension with the Rams. The draft figures to be Green Bay’s best option.
