Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com offered some incite as to some of the roster moves the Green Bay Packers could consider making this offseason during a recent mailbag.
Jordy Nelson
According to Demovsky, the Packers are “likely” to extend WR Jordy Nelson’s contract at some point in near future.
The Packers have benefited from one of the most team-favorable contracts in the league for a few years now.
Nelson, 29 in May, signed a four-year contract worth $13.9 million that included just $5 million guaranteed with the Packers back in 2011. Nelson is set to make just $2.55 million this year, so he’s clearly earned a sizable raise based on his play in the past few years.
Nelson’s three-year average stats include 67 receptions for 1,107 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns and that’s despite being four games due to injury and playing a seven-game stretch with guys like Seneca Wallace, Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn throwing him the ball.
Nelson could end up being paid as a top-five receiver, and possibly come close to the contract signed by Vincent Jackson who received a five-year deal worth $55 million that included $26 million guaranteed.
Tramon Williams
Demovsky writes that the Packers could approach CB Tramon Williams about restructuring his contract.
Williams, soon to be 31, is scheduled to earn $7.5 million next season and has a $9.5 million salary cap hit in 2014. Williams actually played very well for a largely criticized Green Bay secondary last season, and with Sam Shields about to hit free agency, it makes sense that they would try to keep Williams around while lowering his cap figure in the process.
Mike Daniels
DL Mike Daniels wasn’t a heralded pick coming out of Iowa, but he has quickly developed into one of the better interior defensive linemen when it comes to providing inside pressure.
Demovsky believes Daniels has done enough for the Packers to consider offering his an extension at some point in the coming years.
Daniels, 24, still has two years remaining on his contract at very reasonable base salaries of $570,000 and $660,000 respectively. However, the Packers have just two players under contract for the 2014 season currently on their defensive line, so it seems like big changes are coming to that unit. Keeping Daniels as a building block would at least give them piece to continue building around.
