Packers Notes: Sam Shields, John Kuhn, Clay Matthews

Sam Shields

Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Packers have been in regular contact with impending free agent CB Sam Shields regarding contract extension.

Dunne’s source puts the odds of Shields re-signing with Green Bay at “50/50.”

Shields has developed into pretty cornerback who is capable of keeping up with any receiver due to his plus speed. The Packers do have some depth at cornerback with Davon House, Casey Hayward and Micah Hyde, but it’s hard to expect one of them of to replace Shields opposite of Tramon Williams.

Green Bay has cap space to work with, so I would imagine that they will make Shields a competitive offer in order to maintain some continuity at cornerback.

We have Shields listed as the No. 33 player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

John Kuhn

With the Packer recently signing FB Ina Liaina to a reserve/future contract, there has been some speculation that John Kuhn could be on the outs in Green Bay.

After all, Kuhn plays a position that has its value depreciate in recent years and he is currently 32-years-old. On top of that, Kuhn 28.1 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in 2013, but was able to supplement his lack of playing time by contributing on special teams.

Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com writes that although the Packers haven’t reached out to Kuhn regarding an extension, there’s still plenty of time for the two sides to discuss a new extension before the start of free agency in March.

Clay Matthews

Packers OLB Clay Matthews told FOX Sports on Tuesday that he had the pins removed from his right thumb last Friday.

“I need to get healthy,” Matthews said. “Rehab my thumb and get it back to 100 percent so that way there is no setback starting next season.”

There’s is no question that the Packers missed Matthews’ productivity in 2013, so ensure he’s at full strength and no longer in danger of further injuring his thumb is really the priority from their standpoint.

Matthews will enter the second year of his five-year contract worth $65 million, that includes $31 million guaranteed.

  1. He’s another accident waiting to happen. Would not be shocked to see him hurt again next season and miss a bunch of game. The Packers gave him way too much money. Sports writers said Ted really screwed that up. Other backers who are just as productive are getting half what Mathews is getting. Ted bit the big one on this. Especially for a guy who plays half a season.
