Packers Plan To Convert Charles Woodson To Safety?

The Green Bay Packers extension of Charles Woodson may suggest that the team has some future plans for him outside of the cornerback position.

Bill Barnwell of the Football Outsiders has put together some information that shows the decline in cornerback’s durability as they enter their mid-to-late thirties.

“Only 16 CBs in NFL history have started 10 or more games at 35. 10 CBs at 36. Five at 37. Three at 38.”

By the end of the contract, Woodson will be 38 which could suggest that the Packers plan on converting him to a safety position. Woodson’s career hasn’t exactly followed the normal progression of the average NFL player so if anyone could last as a cornerback until he’s 38, it’s Woodson.

Update: Adam Schefter just tweeted that the deal is a two-year contract extension that will extend his deal to five-years.

Josina Anderson tweets that the Green Bay Packers have rewarded the 2009 defensive player of the year Charles Woodson with a contract extension. She notes Showtime Inside the NFL and Fox31 as her sources. The details of the contract extension have yet to come out but we’ll update this story when more information becomes available.
