Packers “Probably Will Part Ways” With Charles Woodson This Offseason

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel suggests that there’s a good chance that Packers cornerback Charles Woodson will not be retained by the team this offseason.

“[Ted] Thompson also probably will part ways with Woodson, who with a $10 million salary cap number is way too expensive to keep around for a 14-year veteran that has suffered two broken collarbones,” writes Silverstein.

Woodson’s production no longer matching his contract and one of Green Bay’s strengths is they secondary, so it makes sense that they would consider parting ways with him. There’s a chance that they could ask him to restructure his current deal and play safety again next season.

A.J. Hawk ($5.45 million) could also be let go in the coming months. The Packer would certainly have some cap space to address some of their core players like Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji.

  1. Makes sense. He’s getting old, injured, expensive, and we’ve got some young guns in the defensive backfield who play a physical brand of football (McMillian, Richardson) that we’d probably like to see more of. Now we just need to get some more physical linebackers (in other words, dump Hawk and get someone more physical and/or just generally better), more physical linemen on both sides of the ball (maybe an actual NT that would allow Raji to shift outside to DE?), and perhaps a defensive coordinator who will MAKE ADJUSTMENTS when his defense is getting their butts handed to them on a silver platter; he’s proved over 3 of our last 4 playoff appearances that he is incapable of making adjustments. I mean, really, scores of 51, 37, and 45 in our last 3 playoff losses? Come on now! Yes, we made a great run in 2010 where our defense was good (we didn’t give up more than 25 points in any game in the 2010 playoff run), but clearly, Capers has been figured out, and has not made ANY adjustments whatsoever. It’s time.

    • Great points here. I agree that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to add another NT or DE given that Ryan Pickett is getting older and they could really use some more impact talent on the DL. I know they drafted Worthy and Daniels, but Worthy was a disappointment and Daniels was relegated to a specialist role. Eric Walden needs to go as well. It will be interesting to see what they do with Evan Dietrich-Smith since they apparently see him as their future center.
